When I go clothes shopping I’m like a kid in a candy store. That probably rings true for a lot of fashion lovers, but my trips to beloved boutiques generally go something like this: walk in and stand at the front for a blessed moment while taking in all the gorgeous eye candy, make a bee-line for the prettiest display and proceed to touch everything at least once, slowly but steadily pull the must-have pieces off the racks and hang them over my free arm until that angel of a salesperson notices the customer trapped beneath the leaning tower of clothing and offers to start a dressing room for me — then I spend at least an hour trying everything on, snapping cell phone pictures of my favorite things and tallying up what I can and can’t actually afford. It all ends in an emotional parting with the stuff I wanted but couldn’t responsibly purchase, a sigh of relief that the most expensive piece didn’t fit me right at all, and a cool-down session also known as standing in line at the cash register.
I have a decent lineup of brands that play gracious host to this shopping ritual, but I’m extremely picky about that lineup. In order for me to call a new shop a “favorite”, it has to have the eye candy, the atmosphere, variety, friendly (and strong) salespeople, ethical business practices, good quality and a really pretty dressing room. I was on my way to lunch one day when I caught sight of a beautiful window display I’d never seen before. It was a new shop that had just opened in the corner spot at an outdoor mall I frequent and I excitedly popped in to see what it was all about. Eye candy and atmosphere? CHECK! There was even a table at the entrance decorated with muffins and juice so I could snack while I gawked! I started to browse and was quickly greeted by a very friendly salesperson who I bombarded with questions about the store. I found out that the place was called Altar’d State and the special thing about Altar’d State, aside from the tasteful and trendy clothing, is that they donate part (or all) of the profits from a good portion of their items to a variety of amazing causes. Awesome people and ethical business practices? CHECK!
I explored every inch of the shop and noticed that they carried some brands I was already in love with like Free People, Blu Pepper, TOMS, Frye and more! I was starting to think my first visit couldn’t get any better when I entered the dressing room. Best dressing room ever. They had the coolest pallet ceiling with bird cage chandeliers, little vintage-framed mirrors on the doors of each room where they write the customer names in dry erase marker, and cozy chairs where you can take a much needed water break — don’t judge me. After exiting the dressing room with some great DIY ideas, I paid up and left with a pretty little armload of clothing without breaking the bank. Success!
Over the next few weeks, I was in contact with them about working with FOLK and they were thrilled to do a giveaway for our subscribers! So now that you know how amazing Altar’d State is, one lucky subscriber will win their choice of any of the gorgeous headbands found on their site, here! The winner will be able to pick one headband, values ranging from $20-$28. I have to tell you, these headbands are amazing. The bead work is beautiful, the quality is so good and my favorite touch is the colorful fabric on the back side of the beaded strips. They thought of everything!
Congratulations to Lori (loro908@…) for winning the giveaway!
