Turner Hill Tea | Loose Leaf Tea

The last gift guide giveaway of the day features a great way to relax and unwind this holiday season – with Turner Hill Tea! What a wonderful hostess gift for those who work so hard to get us all together during the holiday season and open up their homes for us to enjoy time with friends and family. If you are that person, I commend you.

Julia Valovich, owner of Turner Hill Tea, shares her story below:

“When faced with having to find work to support myself, for the first time in my adult life, I took a leap of faith and opened Turner Hill Tea. Two and a half years ago, while nursing a broken arm back to health, I pondered what to do. I wanted to do something I would love. At 49, it wasn’t time to work at a fast food joint. What did I love? Tea! My husband and I had talked that maybe someday when the girls were grown and gone I could open a tea shop. So now, here I was, girls grown and gone and a year after my husband’s passing. Now seemed to be the time to give it a try. I took a tea course and was amazed at how much there is to know about tea! The history alone is mind boggling! I sampled lots of tea and talked with other small business owners before jumping in with both feet. I think that leap of faith was really more like a plunge, but I don’t regret it at all!

One aspect of my business, and my favorite part, is going into homes and providing cuppings, or tea tastings. I love sharing the knowledge I have gained with other people. To see the surprise on their faces when they learn the fact that there are hundreds of tea blends and flavors that they all come from one plant. The askew faces when they learn that ‘herbal’ teas aren’t really tea at all makes me smile. This is well worth the time and effort it takes to run a business. With tea gaining a huge new resurgence in the US, I want others to understand tea better so that their drinking experience is at its very best.

I love supporting small, local and home-based businesses like myself. I believe they are the crux of communities and offer so much more than just products. There is a real sense of pride I feel when I shop locally, knowing that I am helping my neighbors and fellow citizens provide for themselves and their families. Knowing I am receiving quality products with a personal touch is just the icing on the cake. It doesn’t get much better than that!”
